Post Downloads deliberately hosed again :-(
on: March 22, 2013, 01:52

Greetings,

it has recently come to my attention that the current version of Docear has been made unfetchable again:

- On docear.org, the directory was renamed, without leaving a symbolic link in place that could have kept the download URL intact. The intention of providing uniform directory naming is good, but this change was premature. A better time would have been after the release of Beta 09.

- On sourceforge.net, the file was removed altogether.

Both actions together severed all URLs that had been working for many weeks, for no apparent reason.

Result: Docear could no longer be installed on FreeBSD easily.

Do NOTE: Stable URLs for unchanging download files are of paramount importance if you want your potential users to benefit from easy installation on systems that install from source.

FreeBSD ports are a system that downloads your original software package, installs requisite packages, installs them, and then Docear on FreeBSD, along with Desktop icons, Desktop menu items, and file association, to give users an easy-install access to your software.

Again: Please do not relocate, exchange or remove an 'official' (including beta) download file if you aim for easy installation of Docear on other operating systems.

There may be extreme cases that might warrant removal, but I have yet to see one. There has been none in the past.

Please do not intentionally make it harder for your users, and for packagers looking after other operating systems such as FreeBSD (i. e. yours truly), to install your software.

We have only so much energy to spend to chase deliberate changes that make matters worse.

Best regards
Matthias Andree

Hello Matthias Andree,

Both actions together severed all URLs that had been working for many weeks, for no apparent reason.

The reason for switching from SF to github was (apart from our change from bazaar to git, which is by far more commom) the bad performance of SF lately. It takes a lot of time, to upload or download something and even refreshing the page itself or clicking a link was just painfully slow.

Again: Please do not relocate, exchange or remove an 'official' (including beta) download file if you aim for easy installation of Docear on other operating systems.

We will try to keep that in mind. All folders (beta09, beta08, ...) will remain stable, the parent folder will always contain the latest official release and the "experimental" folder will contain the latest experimental version of Docear.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi Matthias Andree,

sorry for the confusion and let me explain our "download system" in more detail:

On Sourceforge there is always a stable copy of all versions of Docear (only for the source code hosting we switched to GitHub but not for the download mirror). You can have an overview of all files hosted on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/docear/files/1.x/
The only reason that there was no copy of the latest Beta 8 on Sourceforge was that I simply forgot to upload it when we released Beta 8 (i uploaded Beta 8 to sourceforge yesterday when I noticed the mistake). If you should ever notice that a version of Docear is missing on Sourceforge, let us know and we will fix it immediately.

On our main download page http://www.docear.org/software/download/ you will find URLs that always point to the latest version of Docear. These links are

http://docear.org/download/docear.exe

http://docear.org/download/docear_windows.zip

http://docear.org/download/docear_linux.tar.gz

http://docear.org/download/docear.dmg

http://docear.org/download/docear_macos.zip

http://docear.org/download/docear_allos.zip

http://docear.org/download/docear_source.zip

We would highly appreciate if you used the latter links (http://docear.org/download/...) because this will ensure that users always have the latest version of Docear. If for any reason you want to link to a particular version but don't want to link to sourceforge, you can also use

http://download.docear.org/1.0.0_beta08/filename

http://download.docear.org/1.0.0_beta07/filename

http://download.docear.org/1.0.0_beta06/filename

...

(replace 'filename' e.g. with docear.exe, docear_linux.tar.gz, ...). However, I cannot promise that the download.docear.org links will remain stable for all times. It might be that someday we will delete very old releases from the server. The most safest option is http://docear.org/download/...

I hope this helps :-)
Joeran
