Post Docear and RepliGo

Hi there how can I get RepliGo to sync with Docear?

I read that this PDF reader is supported. I'm using on Android 4.2.2 on a Nexus 7 tablet.

I'm using Docear on Mac OSX 10.7.5

I save my PDFs to Dropbox.

Docear is monitoring a shared folder on Dropbox.

I had the same issue with Acrobat Reader on Nexus 7 - annotations were not imported into Docear incoming file, even though they were clearly visible in Acrobat PDF Reader when opened directly from Dropbox.

Can someone let me know how I can implement annotating on an Android device and have these annotations inside Docear. That would be brilliant if I can have a workflow like that.

Many thanks for a great product.

Adrian

Thank you for your feedback. Please note that we - the Docear team - currently do not have the time to answer support questions. However, we encourage all Docear users to help each other.

Hm. Something just happened and it\'s not clear what... I tried adding a comment into the PDF from my Mac. Saved the file and refreshed Incoming. Nothing.

I tried to refresh again and suddenly all the annotations are being picked up..! From both Acrobat and Repligo.

But each annotation in the map has a corresponding error which says:

\"Error setting the text for the following input: Null\"

Ah! Just spotted this one too - seems my highlighting the text AND commenting isn\'t allowed? I deleted the highlights and left the comments; saved the PDF and refreshed incoming.. no errors now!

So, still not sure why Incoming never picked up these annotations before? I restarted Docear perhaps that helped too.

Hello Adrian,

Docear can only import comments and bookmarks from PDF files yet.

The only PDF viewer which allows you to create importable highlighted in your PDF files is the PDF-Xchange Viewer which always creates comments from text a user has highlighted (if it is correctly configured).

\"Error setting the text for the following input: Null\"

This error is really strange and maybe it explains why Docear's importing mechanism just stopped. We are currently improving it to be more robust against any errors.
Could you send us an example PDF file which causes the error in Docear? If so, pleasse send it to and please include a link to this post.

Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Stefan

Hello,

I wonder if now there finally are Android PDF readers that behave as PDF-Xchange Viewer does when it highlights text. Does anybody out there know?

Hi there,

the RepliGo PDF Reader for Android works with Docear. I just highlighted some text inside RepliGo and Docear imported it.
Also, when I highlighted some other parts with PDF-Xchange Viewer, the RepliGo Reader displayed these new highlights.

The only difference seems to be how the note box is used. In PDF-Xchange Viewer, the highlighted text is saved inside the note and the author name is given in the title of the note box.
In RepliGo, the entire highlighted text is given in the title (where the author is given in PDF-Xchange viewer), and the note box is left blank.

I think the app is worth the money (less than 3 €).
However, I should add that I have not thoroughly tested it. So you should probably be careful when testing both PDF-XChange Viewer and RepliGo at the same time.

Cheers,
Tabea

Today you find from their website (http://www.cerience.com/products/reader/android):

RepliGo Reader for Android

NOTE: This product was discontinued on June 30, 2014 and is no longer available.

Can't say I know why, and I wasn't able to download and try this myself. I will keep an eye out for Android
readers that would perform as needed.

I already mentioned in another forum topic Adobe Reader (I would try to import annotations... but still don't know how to do it in Docear).

Other popular apps:
- Foxit MobilePDF https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxit.mobile.pdf.lite
- iAnnotate PDF https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.branchfire.iannotate&hl=en
- ezPDF Reader https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=udk.android.reader&hl=en

I just have tried Adobe Reader, but (I think) a friend from my lab use ezPDF together with Evernote for manage paper annotations.

Regards,

Nicolás

From internet forums I've gathered that iAnnotate PDF allows the necessary function to be turned on for importing (as stated here: http://www.docear.org/support/user-manual/#PDF_Editors) if you are using an iPad variety tablet, unfortunately the Android version of this didn't seem to have the option.

One way would be to import the annotations retrospectively (the you could use whichever app), unfortunately the
options for this do not seem that promising yet.

I can confirm that the Foxit MobilePDF (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxit.mobile.pdf.lite) works fine with Docear. Annotations and highlights are imported without any issue.
I've only tried it with 2 papers, but it works.
Give it a try

Please disregard my comment about Foxit MobilePDF. It seems that if you make a multi-line highlight in which on of the lines ends in a -, the text is truncated and is not added to the highlight as a comment. Apologies.
Anyway, I wrote a small java app to fix this. It just takes all the highlights and underlines of a pdf and adds the text an attach the text to the highlight. You can find the code in http://pastebin.com/6UujbLY5 (you'll need Apache PDFBox for this to work - http://pdfbox.apache.org/index.html)
I haven't tested it thoroughly, but it worked for a couple of papers I was having a problem with.
If enough people is interested, I can turn this into a small desktop app. Just reply to this comment.

Foxit PDF for Android 3.7.9.0108 no longer seems to have the problem that you mention @Juan. It now does exactly what\'s needed for Docear to import the annotations. 🙂

Thanks for the script! I haven\'t tried to use it, but if it does what you say, then it\'s really great that you can share it for us to use. I\'ll definitely have a go at this some time in the future.

I can confirm Foxit PDF for Android 3.7.9.0108 exports highlight to comment field, thus it's suitable for Docear.

Juan your code is a game changer! I honestly believe it should become part of Docear as this will allow it to automatically import text from highlights! Then people can use almost any PDF tool they like. Personally I like ezpdf reader Pro for Android because it has very fine control over text highlights. Unfortunately it does not copy the text to the annotations. I have contacted the developers and asked for a setting to allow this, but who know when and if they will implement it.

Until that time, I have tested all the most popular PDF readers and foxitmobile is the only one that works the way Docear requires. I only have one problem with it in that it is very difficult to highlight accurately. I tested Adobe reader, xodo, PDF max, PDF reader, foxit, and ezpdf reader.
