Post docear- (introducing: online document search)

Hello guys,

At the end of May I received the acknowledgment of my application for a Short Time Scientific Mission. I was very happy, because it allowed me to travel to Nicosia (Cyprus) for a full month 😎 to work on a new and (hopefully) very useful feature together with my host Dr. Georgia Kapitsaki from the UCY Nicosia. During my 4 weeks stay my colleague Marcel covered my back and helped me with my work at our home University in Magdeburg, Germany.
Dr. Kapitsaki discussed with me both the research opportunities of the new search engine.

4 weeks meant a lot of time, for research and for coding. Git has to say the following about the code changes (Docear and the webservice summarized):

114 files changed, 5281 insertions(+), 3309 deletions(-)

I am sure you don't care about boring statistics like that. You are probably more eager to know what exactly I was working on?

Behold, the new online document search feature, introduced into Docear with this new experimental version of Docear!! 😀

How to use it:
Double-clicking the "Online search" icon in Docear's workspace panel on the left hand side or clicking the action from our ribbon ("Search and Filter > Documents > Online Search"), will open a new view with a text-field. If you have used Docear for a while, you will also see some terms that hopefully reflect your research interests beneath the input text. If you click them, they will be added to the search string. You can of course discard these terms and add your own terms.

When you are done, click the OK-Button or press <Enter> and the results will be displayed.
You can request more documents by using the paginator buttons beneath the search results.

For now the search results will be retrieved from our digital library (the same data source of 1.8 million academic articles our recommender system works on). For the future I plan to add options to access other databases, e.g., Google Scholar as well.

Please test this new feature and tell us about any bugs you can find using our bug tracking forum :
Feedback and constructive criticism is (as always) also very welcome. Please post it here:

If you find no critical bugs we will release this version of Docear as public Beta on Friday or on Monday.

Please keep in mind that this release is experimental. There might be bugs, so please use it with care and backup your data!

How to download it:
Windows users should use:
