Post docear-1.1.0.0_beta_build229 (Beta version of Docear 1.1)

Hello guys,

with our last experimental release we have implemented some major improvements to Docear. With your help we were able to complete these features. Thank you everyone for sending us your BibTeX / log or mind map files.
Your help was invaluable for us - thanks a lot for your support guys!

If you find any bugs, have questions or just want to give us a virtual hug, please don't hesitate and let us know! 🙂

Since our community is continuously growing we currently restrict ourselves to only answer questions in the forum once or twice a week. This is necessary in order to save enough time to improve Docear.
I am very much relieved that we have some advanced users who help others to understand Docear - thumbs up, please keep up the good work. 🙂 🙂 🙂

The new key features of Docear 1.1:

  • We have introduced our improved metadata retrieval feature, which seems to work quite well. It is one of our major improvements and makes the ground for even more advanced features and changes in workflow.
  • We hope to improve Docear's user interface and make it easier to understand and work with - stay tuned for more information about this. 🙂

  • we have introduced better support for BibTeX files created by Zotero or Mendeley. As you may know there is no real BibTeX standard and there are lots of different styles or dialects out there.
  • Zotero for instance does not escape any semicolons or colons in file fields, although they are used to separate multiple files from each other or a file's path from the description or file type data.
With your help we were able to fix all known issues! 😀

Some of our Mendeley users were not able to use Docear because of duplicated references in the BibTeX files created by Mendeley. Docear needed to be able to match PDF files to references unambiguously. With this version of Docear you can choose to ignore all duplicate references. If you select to ignore duplicates Docear will basically accept the first matching reference instead of making sure that it will always use the same one. While this is not a perfect solution, you will now at least be able to use Docear with Mendeley BibTeX files. And we have even planned some large improvements to this mechanism with the user interface changes I mentioned above.

  • We have implemented some changes which help to avoid data loss when Docear is saving a mind map file. If Docear has been closed forcefully, e.g. by a computer crash (blue screen on Windows systems) or by you killing the Java or Docear process manually, Docear was not able to complete its task to write the XML of the mind map file. We now create temporary files (e.g. "~my_mindmap.mm") first and only if saving was successful we overwrite the existing mind map file (e.g. "my_mindmap.mm")
  • Docear now supports Windows network drives to be used as literature repository. If you want to share your PDF files with other researchers over a network drive you are now good to go.
