Hello Docear community,

It has been a while since our last version of Docear.

But there are some good news. 🙂

Regarding a web-based version of Docear and the planned collaboration feature. Five very dedicated and excellent students of the HTW Berlin have developed a first version of Docear's online viewer ( It is an web based mind map viewer which allows users who have activated Docear's backup feature to view their mind maps in a web browser.
A lot of planned features are still missing, but if you are curious, please have a look at it and tell us waht you think about it. 🙂
You can read the full story here:

And there is also some good news about the Desktop version. This experimental release mainly fixes a lot of very annoying bugs you have told us about. Thanks for your help. 🙂

Apart from fixing a lot of small glitches, the following has changed:

Feature enhancements include:
#678 Adobe Acrobat professional was not found on MacOS
#784 More default file types to be imported

Big fixes include:
#734 Open document did not work with system PDF reader in one dialog
#785 splash screen hid the setup dialogs on first installation (Linux)
#739 References was not assigned to PDF correctly
#769 Monitoring Update Conflict was not solvable
#797 Docear "destroyed" annotations in PDFs when the node style was changed in a mind map
#800 "import annotations" options were not visible when using special PDF files
#725 PDF destinations were not updated in mind maps
#719 comments on underlined text passages were not imported
#701 PDF via Drag&Drop caused other object model than adding a PDF via monitoring function
#790 fixed errors caused by notification bar
#715 0kb mind map created when the map was deleted on the hard drive
#730 reference updater threw exceptions when resolving node hyperlinks

Please test this version of Docear, but also keep in mind that it is still experimental. It is always a good idea to keep backups of your data.

Upcoming changes:
Apart from our research projects we are currently working on a new workspace concept which will be a lot easier to use and which is (together with the online viewer) a step to both the synchronization and collaboration feature.
Imagine you are working on a paper in Docear and want to share your progress with a colleague some hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Wouldn't it be nice to work on your mind map at the same time? To fit your ideas together in one place even when your colleague does not use the desktop version of Docear? It is still a long road to go, but we believe that its totally worth the effort. 🙂

Thanks for your help with testing Docear!
Cheers and best regards,

Stefan Langer
