Post Docear Fails to Start after Install

have installed and uninstalled the current version of Docear (Ver1.0 RC4) several times now and unable to get it to start.
Have tried installing to a different directory (C:\Docear, and re-booting between installations and between install and start-up.
Have also tried starting docear.bat and docearConsole.exe without success.
Running Windows 7 and Java Ver 8.
Have successfully installed Docear on a separate machine also running Windows 7.

Love Docear but need it to work on my new machine - any ideas??

Hello Bruce,

this bug is currently our highest priority, however, we need your help in order to fix it.
Could you please send us your log files? They are stored in a folder cald ".docear" which can be found somewhere at C:\Users\<your-windows-user-name>\.

In case you can't find it:
When starting Docear with help of the "Docear.bat" file, it will start up using a terminal (console/ cmd). If you see any lines starting with "STDERR" could you please scroll to the top and send a screenshot to along with aling to this forum thread?

Hi Stefan,
I have just tried to install the new version of Docear (Ver 1.0 Stable)and have received the following message at startup:

"Your user settings directory has not been set or is set with the system root directory. This might cause further issues. Do you want to continue?" No = Docear shutdown. Yes = Docear hangup without starting.

thanks for your help with this. My colleague Marcel has already contacted you via email in order to fix this issue. We have found a small glitch in Docear's code which could be responsible for this bug. Unfortunately we can't test the fix here, but you can:

If you download this file and replace the "plugin.jar" in your Docear installation folder with this file, it might work.

there is a fix.
I am sorry - my post before yours is a little bit unclear. It seems like I have pressed the "Send" button to early before formulating my answer.

Hi! I am having the same issue. I just installed Docear for the first time a few days ago, using the most recent version.
Windows 8.1
Java 8

When I try to launch Docear, it hangs up on the splash screen. If I uninstall and reinastall, I can launch the program once, but if I close Docear, it won't start up again unless I reinstall.

I have read about this issue on several threads, it seems that the fix is the plugin.jar, but the file is not longer available.

Hello 🙂

Similar issue - Docear installed okay, but it won't start. After running the .exe i just get 99% CPU load from javaw.exe and nothing else is happening - no splash screen. The same happens if i run .bat, except the java process is the cli version - java.exe.

Windows XP SP2; Java 6; Docear 1.1.0_stable

have you started Docear with a new project or did you use an already existing one?
If it has something to do with existing projects, would you be fine sharing them with me (just for bug fixing - I would not give them away or use them for any other puprose than bug fixing). If you are ok with that, please send an email to and I will give you more information. Please include a link to this forum thread.

I would also like to have a look at your log files. You can find them at "C:\Users\<your_username>\.docear\logs" (Windows) or "~/.docear/logs" (POSIX-compatible OS).

I\'m not very technologically literate so this might be a bit of a dumb question. Docear just won\'t open for me. I\'m running Windows 8 and tried to use a different location for the settings folder, which didn\'t seem to be too successful. Are there any other solutions for this problem? I run into a similar issue. My setup is:

Win 7 Pro 64bit, Active directory with home, profile and folder redirections on network drives, user without admin rights.

When I start docear it hangs at the splash screen. Running it with the (Admin) account used for installation works fine.

thanks for your response. I think you got something wrong: I use Docear under Windows 7. However, I re-installed Java on Friday again and Docear is working now. Therefore I consider this as solved now.

Hello,

Could anyone help with a problem after having Docear installed and trying to start it? The error message says ``The registry refers to a nonexistent Java Runtime Environment installation or the runtime is corrupted. The system cannot find the file specified. '

First time installation of Docear. Have already updated Java, have uninstalled four times, have added “-Dorg.freeplane.userfpdir=C:\Program Files (x86)\Docear” to the docear.bat file.

My system is Win7(64 bit).

Any idea how to solve this problem please?

I encountered the same problem as Yunbi:

...and Docer fail to open.

System specifications: Windows 10 64bit

Hi Rich,

I solve the problem in this way:
uninstall Docear, then go to the Java runtime website and install the latest version of java on your computer. Install again Docear, it should works.

https://www.java.com/en/download/ check all java downloads to choose the rigth one for your operating system/version.
