Post Docear doesnt open after latest download

I upgraded on 2 machines, one yesterday (Windows 7), one today (Vista). I have to open a document to open Docear. Surely that's not right?

Just to clarify, when I try to open the program itself, nothing happens. I can open a document, and then the program opens.

Hello Elisabeth,

There are a few users who have reported similar problems. It's apparently related to a combination of Java 32-Bit on a Windows 64-Bit system.
In your installation folder are two executable files: Docear.exe and Docear.bat

Could you please try if one of these files work?
You could then change the Docear link to use the correct executable file.

How do I get to the installation folders? I am pretty sure that my laptop, at least, is not a Windows 64-bit system, but I will try.

Hello Elisabeth,

If you have used the default settings during the Installation of Docear, it can be found in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Docear". Just navigate there with your file browser and double-click the Docear.bat and Docear.exe files to see if they work.
If Docear is not installed at that location you can find out about the installation folder by right-clicking the Docear-Icon which you wanted to use to start the application. Please select the last of the options (the "Preferences"). In the opening dialog you can find a "Target" textbox with the installation folder.

Hello

I face the same problem that Elisabeth is experiencing. I downloaded the new Docear version in two computers, but it doesnt open any more. Both Docear.exe and Docear.bat has no effect. The initial promotional window appears but never runs the programme. That for me is a huge problem, since I have many files organized with it for my thesis. My configuration is a Windows 7, 64 bits, Java 7.

Please, fix this problem ASAP!!!

Hello Felipe,

could you try the following?
Please delete Docear's settings ("C:\users\<your_username>\.docear"). Some users reported that this might help.
Please download the latest release of Docear and start again.

Docear works fine for us on Java7 and Windows 64-Bit.

Now I can open Docear. But there is an huge exclamation in all my mindmaps saying that the projects my maps are associeted with are not loaded or entirely missing, therefore all advanced features, like reference and PDF management, will not work. It recomend me to import the project. How can I find them and import?

Hello Felipe,

please use "Project > Main > Import project" from Docear's ribbon bar.
Please use the "Browse..." button in the opening dialog and navigate to the project folder.

Then click the "Finish" button.

Hello,
I have downloaded Docear yesterday for the first time on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.1 (13B42) and Java 7 Update 45 (build 1.7.0_45-b18). I have copied the .app from the .dmg to the Application folder and I have opened with the Ctrl option in order to get around the security block. The program does start but remains stuck on the splash screen forever. The program seems to be running since it does not say \"Application not responding\" and I can quit it normally.
I can\'t get the program working.

Hello Andrea,

this should only happen if you had a older version of Docear installed.

Please open a terminal and issue the following command:

rm -r ~/.docear

This will remove the hidden folder ".docear" (a folder which stores Docear's preferences) from your home folder (i.e. "~") on your hard disk. After that you should be able to start Docear.
If Docear still does not start, could you try to start it from the terminal and post the output here?

You wrote that you downloaded and started Docear for the first time. Am I right and you have not already created any Docear projects which you would need to import again after that?

Hello,

sorry for late reply. I had not .docear folder on my Home folder after I installed Docear or tried to run it for the first time. I tried to run the program with

open

command but it doesn\'t emit any error message as you can say from the screenshot .

I then tried to create an empty .docear folder with my username as owner and I got it working ! Thanks for support.

I am very glad it works now, but I am a little bit puzzled how creating the ".docear" folder could have fixed the issue.

somehting similar to #1 happened to me, Win 8.1 x64, neither the EXE nor the BAT worked, had to delete the .docear folder as per your suggestion to be able to open docear again

P.S. when executing the EXE taskmanager showed a JAR consuming +800mb of memory while when executing the bat just 280mb were used

Hello,

I have a problem with the installation of docear on may mac. I have OS X 10.9.1.
I downloaded the .dmg file from this webpage and double-clicked on it.
Then, the docear icon appeared. But when I tried to open docear by clicking the icon a message
appeared saying that 'Docear is damaged and can't be opened. It is recommended to eject this image.'
I have Java version 7 Update 45 installed.

I tried to install docear several times but without success.
Does anybody has an idea what I am doing wrong?

@Mauro:
in the BAT file the memory is restrained to a maximum of 512 MB. With the EXE file their are no such constraints. The memory is assigned by the operating system. It's not a fixed value and should not be a poroblem.

As far as I know, at least on Linux systems processes take as much memory as they can get in order to run as smooth as possible and to make sure they don't need to allocate more whenever they really require more. That does not mean that they take too much and the memory could not be taken by other processes as well.
I am not an expert in operating systems especially not for Microsoft Windows, but I believe that Windows handles this in a similar way. Why should RAM not be assigned if it could also serve a purpose.

Downloaded and installed Docear the latest stable version like 10s of times (Win 8.1 64 bit, Java 7 Update 51, 64 bit).
Was able to install and but the program did not launch.
Wasted around 6-8 hours trying all stuff, including what is mentioned in FAQ without success.
Then I installed the program at my office(Windows 8, 64 bit, Java 6 Update 24(Both 32 & 64 bit). Worked like charm.

Came back home removed all java, installed Java 6 Update 24(Both 32 & 64 bit ). Voila!!!
Runs perfectly fine.

Hi All,

After seeing Docear on a link i got excited to download it. Have worked 4 hours at least to download and open it try to use bat and exe both files to open it on my windows 7 professional but its 32 bit....will it not work here?

I am desperate but seems to buy new windows for it????

Can any one help?

Hello Annoisa,

have you installed Java on your windows system?
If so, could you please tell us which version and which Bit-depth? (you can find out by issuing the command "java -version" in a command prompt (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/open-a-command-prompt-window).

Mine for instance says:

java version "1.7.0_55"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_55-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.55-b03, mixed mode)

Hi Stefan

I have just downloaded Docear V1.03 for use on my Windows7 system with Java Version7, Update 65.

Previously, I have successfully been using Docear 1.0(stable) on the same system

When installing, I get the message

"Error opening file for writing: C:\Program Files (x86)\Docear\docear.exe"

If I hit "Ignore" it apparently goes on to install and gives an "Installed Successfully" message.

However, when I go to start up, I get the Docear splash screen but nothing after that.

Could you please help me out.

I have the same problem as Bruce-Napier.
It happens yesterday after I have just downloaded the new version.
I tried to download it again but nothing happens. The docear splash screen is there but it doesn't open.

Hello Amina, hello Bruce,

that's very strange. I suspect it has something to do with Docear's settings folder. Could you please locate it, zip it and send it to along with a link to this forum thread? The folder is named ".docear" (!not "Docear"), it is located in your home folder - on Windows systems at "C:\Users\<your windows username>\.docear" on MacOS or Linux systems at "~/.docear"

If you delete this folder you should be fine to start Docear again. After that, however, you will need to import your old project (Docear will act as if it was started for the first time). In the opening setup-wizard, please choose to import an existing project and choose the corresponding folder (e.g.: "C:\Users\<your windows username\Docear"). Please do not open mind maps without importing the full project first.

If you need more help, please let me know.

After uninstalling and re-installing Docear V1.03, I no longer get the error message during installation. However Docear still hangs up at the splash screen. I have checked the Windows Home Folder at C:\Users\<Username>\ and there is no ".docear" folder.

Any ideas??

Hello Bruce,

Which version of Windows do you use? Have you really exchanged the "<Username>" placeholder with your real username, e.g. C:\Users\bruce\.docear?

If you still can't find the .docear folder, have you ever managed to start Docear before on your computer? If so, please search the ".docear" folder on your hard drive, e.g. at "C:\Users\All Users\.docear" or similar.

(my PC : Windows 8.1 , Java 8 update 111, Docear 1.2.0 stable build 291)

Thank you very much for this wonderful product. Wondered why it took me so long to finally find it 🙂

I had been using Docear for a week now and it worked perfectly until yesterday, when it wouldn\'t start (ie. only promotional page appeared and then nothing happened)

I followed the previous instructions (since 9/2014) by deleting C:\\Users\\<username>\\.docear and then relaunch Docear. It worked and then re-imported all the projects I created. But this method only works temporarily. When I closed Docear and re-start again, it stopped working again. I needed to repeat the same deletion and re-import projects process. Moreover, I also lost all my settings/preference in Docear (eg. F-bar in toolbars, customised styles etc). It will be a pain to re-set every time I start Docear (because of the need to delete .docear) as this defeats the purpose of settings.

Just wondered if there is any work-around to this issue. I understand that no one had complained about this since 2014. Is there a more up-to-date solution to this problem? Thank you in advanced for any helpful hint.
