Post Adobe Pro/Docear Issues in Windows

Firstly, thanks for creating what looks like it will be a great program.

I\'ve just installed and I\'m having some issues with adobe pro. I\'ve got acrobat pro 9.2, windows 7, and the most up to date version of Java.

When I go to preferences and click the \"choose from installed compatible pdf readers\" button. I get an odd message

\"The PDF X-Change-Viewer you are using has incompatible settings...\"

I don\'t have PDF X-Change-Viewer installed!

When I select \"Acrobat\" from the drop down, I get either the same box again, or

\"The settings of the selected PDF viewer could not be changed correctly. You need to change them manually\"

Could you give me the correct manual settings for Acobat pro?

thanks.

Thank you for your feedback. Please note that we - the Docear team - currently do not have the time to answer support questions. However, we encourage all Docear users to help each other.

configure your PDF viewer manualy
there you can enter the path of your PDF tool
you have three automatic values $FILE, $PAGE and $TITLE
apply them to your PDF tool path as you need them

here i found some example parameters to launch acrobat reader
http://www.windows-commandline.com/2010/07/launch-acrobat-reader-from-run.html
here is a list of adobe parameters
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/sdk/pdf/pdf_creation_apis_and_specs/PDFOpenParameters.pdf

this may help

Thanks dubi.

I've now set up the manual configuration. However there is still odd behaviour.

Every time I open docear, just after the splash screen, I get a dialogue saying

"The PDF X-Change-Viewer you are using has incompatible settings...".

If I select acrobat from the drop down, I get the behaviour as in my previous post. If I press cancel, settings revert "system default pdf viewer".

I have to re-enter the manual acrobat pro settings every time I open docear.

It seems that the program is confusing acrobat pro with pdf x-change-viewer for some reason.

Hello John,

we highly recommend to use the PDF X-Change-Viewer to our users because Docear can even import highlighted text a user has marked using this tool.
To make this work we need to set some very specific settings for this viewer.

The only reason for this issue I can think of, is that Docear somehow finds old settings of the application.
Have you ever installed and used the PDF X-Change-Viewer?

I have created a ticket for this issue:
https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/docear/ticket/814

Thanks for your help with this matter.

Best,
Stefan

No, I've never installed PDF X-Change viewer. The closest I got was to click on the link presented by docear to go to the webpage, but I did not download it.

I really don't want to switch away from acrobat pro, for various reasons.

Hello John,

I really don't want to switch away from acrobat pro, for various reasons.

I can totally understand that.

Could you please select "Help">"Send PDF X-Change Viewer Settings ..." from Docear's menubar?
It will generate a zip file with the registration keys that are found for the viewer and add it to an email address. Please include a link to this post and send it to us.

It will help us a lot wioth our task to find this bug.

Best,
Stefan

Hello,

I have the same issues with Acrobat Pro XI. I had a look on the sourcecode and I think this issue is caused by line 1233 in PdfUtilitiesController.java [hasCompatibleSettings()] (latest build 147):
exportRegistryKey(\"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\\\Software\\\\Adobe\\\\Adobe Acrobat\\\\10.0\\\\Annots\\\\cPrefs\", exportFile);
There is only a static comparison against the Acrobat 10.0. It does not take different versions of acrobat into account!

Perhaps there is a possibility to introduce an option within docear, whether docear should check the PDF reader settings or not?

Best regards,
CfK

Hello again,

a temporary workaround for that issue is to create the registry keys manually (bcopyTextToMarkupAnnot=dword:00000001 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\10.0\Annots\Prefs\).
Docear is then satisfied.

Best regards,
CfK

Hi John,

Did you finally solve this issue (without having to change the registry)?

Cheers,

Jelmer
