Docear4Word 1.30 is available for download. We improved the error handling, the speed, and the robustness for special characters in BibTeX keys. Here are all changes in detail

  • A database parsing error during Refresh now displays message with line and column information.
  • More robustness for special characters in BibTeX keys:
    • Changing to the official spec of allowed characters was causing too many problems for existing libraries.
    • < > & % { } ” plus whitespace characters are now disallowed but any other char is valid
    • An apostrophe ‘ is allowed in the database but is removed from the BibTeX key before use rather than treat it as invalid.
  • Some optimizations have been made so that moving through a large document with many fields should be faster
  • When the Reference tab is selected (and the Docear4Word buttons need to be updated), Docear4Word now makes the minimum number of checks necessary. It is still slower towards the end of a large document than the beginning but much improved over previous versions.
  • When the Reference tab is not selected, Docear4Word makes no checks and so cursor movement is at full speed regardless of position in the document.

Is this project dead? The last software update shown in the release notes was in 2014:

https://www.docear.org/tag/docear4word-2/

and a lot of bugs have accumulated since then:

Should we move on?

Hi, I’m using docear4word to write my thesis, overall it works well except that every citation takes almost 1 minutes to finish. That is, if you insert a reference, you need to wait for ONE minute to wait for the processing. Can it be fast? I don’t expect it to be straight through, but with the modern computing ability (for example, I have 8GB ram and Core i3 chip and 64 bit windows 8.1 OS), it shouldn’t work in such a distracting way (as you can imagine, everytime when I was waiting for the ONE minute, I went to websurfing). If I have hundreds of references, I lost several days on waiting which is a big sacrifice of using Docear. 😡 Can anybody improve the addon?

It was not response when I clicked the “add references” button on Microsoft Word 2010 while it showed dialog when I click the “setting” button. My computer operation system is Windows 7 X64.

I have encountered the same problem and solved it. The key is that the pathway for your reference database should be in English!
I established a pathway including chinese characters and failed to “add reference”. The problem was gone after I changed the pathway name into all English.
